tach no work

Suddenly my tach isn't working. I installed an AEM Twin Fire and that's the last it worked, it's still hooked up correctly to the trailing coil. Could the twin fire kill a tach? The fuel gauge works, so it isn't the fuse, I can bypass the AEM and the tach still doesn't work. I checked to make sure there was continuity from the coil through the connector into the main harness, haven't pulled the cluster to check at that point. Any other ideas before I decide I have to pull the cluster?
thanks!

May not be your problem but when my tach stopped, I just shotgun resoldered it. Been fine ever since the last ten years.

Tach

Hey Tom,

My ignition is stock but when I had tack problems it was a loose primary wire fit on the points. The terminal would snap on but then be loose. The tack ran off of one point. I am running both points all the time and didn't feel the cutting out if it were stock. It sounds like it is related to your last addition. How does the ignition work/feel otherwise?

I have electronic ignition and get trailing spark, the tach gets signal directly off the coil so I think everything should be good in the engine bay... unless I am not correctly understanding.

I hope I don't have to resolder the tach, I hate doing that kind of work

Anytime i had a tach failure was due to failed trailing ignitor on my DLDFIS ignition. Modified 1st gen rx-7 electronic ignition. Probably 3 times total over several years. Check for voltage at coil 12 VDC and use inductive timing light to trailing coil and verify spark. If no spark, then failed ignitor on distributor.
Good luck.

I get spark, so the whole ignition system is working. I haven't had time to pull the tach so looks like I will be tachless for 7stock this time.

5 years later and my tach still isn't working. I finally decided today to tear into it and found a couple blown up resistors on the circuit board attached to the tach. Does anybody have a circuit diagram of the tach or have a good tach sitting out they could take a picture of that circuit board?

It's the big resistor that's coming in off the black wire and the smaller resister sitting right next to it. A measurement with an ohm meter would work, or even just posting what the color bands on the resistors are.

The smaller resistor may possibly be yellow-gray-black-silver, or 48ohm.
The big one is just all burnt up black.

thank you

Chris, that is exactly what I was looking for! Guess the red band on my little one was charred to look black and all the bands on what's left of the big one look black.

nwaco, thanks much for the offer! I will get in touch.

And thanks everybody for looking!

Is it not an amazing world that we live in? I mean that how a guy in CA can post a message about a tiny component of his obscure truck, and a few hours later a guy in MA can take pictures with his phone amd post them to said person. Amazing times!!!

Guess tach still isn't quite perfect. It seems like I am getting some kind of feedback from the tach into the redline buzzer. At light throttle when cruising I get a faint buzz from it, but at full throttle or no throttle decel the buzz quits. I guess I could just disconnect the buzzer, but was hoping somebody had an idea of what might be the cause?

THAT'S IT!!!...HIT IT WITH A STICK SEVERAL TIMES!!!!

Sorry man wish I could help you with this. I'm sure when I get mine up and running I'll have the same kind of problem getting my Megasquirt to run the tach.

I just might hit it with a stick if it doesn't shut up! I think I just need to verify that I have it connected to the correct terminal on the coil.

At light throttle when cruising I get a faint buzz from it, but at full throttle or no throttle decel the buzz quits.

It almost sounds like it is operating backwards, is there any chance you could reverse polarity at the tack?

Maybe a missing diode that blocks back feed?

Try pestering the ignition hotline for a cure for this.

Good luck.

Tim
