B2200 Diesel Brake Rotors?

Hey guys,

My PU is in need of new rotors, and while I was looking around for parts, I noticed something interesting. The REPU and the B2000 through 84 seem to use the same front rotor. However, the B2200 diesel runs a slightly different rotor that appears to be the same in all dimensions except 1: surface thickness. The diesel rotor is quite a bit thicker.

Got these #s off Parts America (Advance) under the Wagner Advance Tech rotors:

New Surface Thickness:
2200=Was blank
REPU.472

Replacement thickness
2200=.748
REPU=.433

Overall height:
2200=1.41
REPU=1.406

Mounting Bolt Diameter:
2200=4.016
REPU=4.02

Overall Diameter:
Both 10.8

So, anyone ever hear of using these rotors on a REPU?

I know it's not a vented rotor or anything, but it is thicker which = more capacity to accept heat. If the rotors fit, my guess is you'd need to switch to 2200 Diesel Calipers, too.

This could be a good thing, as the 2000/REPU calipers are that weird wedge design, but the 2200 seem to be a normal glide-pin setup. They "look" to have roughly the same mounting hole design/spacing, and it seems unlikely that the 2200 Diesel would have different knuckles, but it might. If they bolt up though, and the brakelines are the same or can be made to work, it might be an inexpensive and relitively easy way to increase the braking capacity on the REPU. If it is a boltup, you can get a set of rotors/calipers for under $200 total. And if you're changing the parts anyway, it might be a nice option, as they're about the same price.

There is a similar upgrade to the 88 323 GTX front brakes where the rotor is the same diameter, but much thicker. It seemed to me at least to increase the brake's resistance to fade quite a bit, and it's a very popular upgrade.

OTOH, the pad options for the B2200 diesel appear to be limited. I know Porterfield can make up custom pads if you send them an old pad plate, but I don't know if that's $$$, or if they'll come out close to their other pads, whcih are not cheap anyway.

I also looked at the 86 B2000 brakes, and while the rotors are the same diameter (10.8) and are vented, the rotor itself is very different. Not sure on the knuckle either, so calipers might be difficult as well. The 86 does have the same bolt pattern, though...

Gonna go buy some parts and fool around with them this weekend.

Yes, REPU rotors are use on newer mazda and courier trucks.

The B2200 diesel doesn't sound bad at all but I'd rather go all the way and get vented discs. I've looked at the 323 GTX and it is promising. .866" thick (22mm), vented, and the bolt circle to hub is 100mm but REPU is 102mm. Need to redrill the rotor. The hole for the center hub is only 55mm and REPU is 80mm = problem. Need to bore the hub out larger, and do it perfectly to keep it balanced. The thickess of the rotor's surface where it meets the flat hub needs to be considered. Thinner for an economy car is not better than for a heavier truck. Also look at the overall HEIGHT of the rotor, backside to hub mounting surface. That determines how far pushed out or in the rotor and caliper will be.

Nissan NX2000 has some nice 18mm thick vented rotors and I drove my friend's and that car stops on a dime. It has a lot of SWEPT AREA which is the contact patch of the brake pad. More = more stopping power and brake torque.

Save time and $$ by getting all the specs on brembo's searchable website:

Yeah, I agree vented would be nice. Just figured the diesel would be cool if you can get everything to bolt up without modding...

Not sure if you realized, but I was not referring to using GTX rotors on the REPU, but to a similar upgrade to the GTX using Galant rotors and MX6 Calipers.

But, now that you mention it, the GTX rotors do mount up similar to the REPU, and I happen to have a spare set. I will try mocking that up as well. And if you're saying the rotor thickness is ~.8 on the GTX, then maybe the diesel calipers would be an option as those rotors are ~ the same.

I will also check the hat thickness on the GTX disc to see how it compares to the REPU disc. I have a friend with a lathe, and I think I could have him turn the rotors to widen the hub diameter.

Thanks Brad.

Brad, in your post above, were you talking about GTX rotors, or standard 323 rotors. I don't believe they are the same...

There were a lot to choose from I found 1 for a 16valve 323. It may not have been the right one.

This is a rotor from MAZDA-USA application 323 DOHC/4WD - and it looks promising but you'll have to lathe the hub and redrill the 4 holes.

Picked up a set of the 2200 Diesel brake rotors. Again, they are not vented, but very beefy compared to the stock REPU rotors. Will post up a pick shortly. Still waiting to get a set of calipers to mount em up on the truck, though.
