For all the guys with A/C...

Finally got around to properly mounting my under dash unit and hooking up the relay. Swapped on R134A adapter to low side port, pulled a 1.3bar vacuum on the system, made sure it held for 20+ minutes, then did an inital charge of about one half can 134 & conversion oil (basically til the vacuum went to zero, but the compressor never kicked on. The fan didn't even come on, as if the relay wasn't getting power, but I made sure the coil was putting out power- all is OK there. I'm thinking it may have something to do with an unlabeled wire coming out of my relay that I don't know where it goes. The wire colors I have and where the label on the back of the relay says they should go:

red: to evaporator pressure sensor wire (I only have one available wire coming from the under dash unit- a blue one with a female spade connector on it

yellow: to coil negative (-)

green: to compressor switch wire

black: to ground

white or cream colored wire: not labeled where it goes, so I just have it hanging right now

My question for the guys with A/C- do my wire colors match what you have on your truck, and if so- where does this white/cream wire go?

I know the compressor won't kick on if the pressure in the system is low, but I have enough refrigerant in there that it should kick on, even if for just a second, which would then pull more refrigerant into the system, and get it working properly. I've redone RX-7 systems, one on my old Jeep, and my Ford truck, and all of those compressors started cycling once I tried putting refrigerant into the low side (suction) port, even thought I never even pulled a vacuum on those cars- the compressor just pulled it through.

Ideas? My guess right now is the relay is junk or else the fan speed switch on my dash unit isn't working.

TIA,
Neal.

When you say, 'fan' do you mean the blower inside the cab? I'm installing the same unit in mine, althought I'm not quite as far along as you (waiting on compressor bracket). My inside blower comes on with all speeds fine, Bit I'm still unsure of what wire does what coming out of the little control box mounted on the back side of the unit. Also, I have no pressure switch of any kind...bet I need one.

AC

Does anyone know who actually made the air conditioner units for Mazda? I believe there were two manufacturers but I can recall either of the names. A query to one of them might lead to an old dusty manual or maybe acess to some of those "gray" memories. (Most of the people from the days of the REPUs are getting up there. The corporate memories of accessory companies and even Mazda seem to have alzheimers, I would love to speak Japanese and visit all the old guys who worked the assembly lines for Mazda and their suppliers. It's a resource that's being ignored and lost to all of us forever)

Well, I know one of the suppliers was Lone Star in Texas. There was another outfit in Texas that supplied alot of the Cosmo and early RX-7 stuff too... I can't remember that one, but it was a guy's name, literally, like "Neal Swigert Air Conditioning". I have pulled apart one Cosmo and about ten RX-7s with the latter supplier's sticker on the evaporator casing, and about twenty RX-7s with the Lone Star sticker on those evaporator cases. I am fairly certain none or very few of the cars came over from Japan with the A/C already installed until the early '80s. Until then most of the installs were done at the entry port, hence why so many had stateside supplier stickers on them, and condenser brackets, compressors, etc. can vary so much from one car to the next, even within the same year.

Mike has a thread going on rx7club.com (http://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=765681). I have a feeling more info is going to come about on that thread, as Mike pointed out to me that GORacing seems to have his crap together when it comes to the vintage A/C systems.

Mike- the fan I am referring to is the one on the dash unit, not the one for the truck heater.

extra wire

Hmmm

Kansei, see if you can temporarly bypass the evap sensor (low pressure) swich. It might just need more initial charge to kick on.

Finally...

Thanks to Charles' help last week, I finally got my A/C up and running, and boy was it worth it! Colder than my daily driver Camry, and the blower motor is unbelievably powerful! The best part is that the wiring got sorted out using a standard off-the-shelf automotive relay from Radio Shack (how Charles' truck was set up).

If anyone has an under dash unit, but is missing the bulk of the other bits, let me know, and I can get you the part number of the relay along with a diagram of what wires go where. As long as you have the under dash unit, you can make up the rest of the system from RX-7 parts like Mike has done.

Neal

Did your unit (inside) have the little box with the wires coming out? If so, how did you wire that up?

Thanks

Mike,

Like we have chatted by email- the circuit board you have sent me pics of isn't supposed to be outside the unit. ALL you should have coming out of the unit is a flat connector w/three or four wires to it (I am on the road for work, can't look at my truck), the short red wire coming out of the blower motor, a grey wire (typically fairly long), and a light blue wire (often with a female spade connector on it). That's it. No loose circuit boards. I will have to send you some pictures tomorrow night when I get home of my spare unit I just sold to Chuck. Another guess is your circuit board may be one of the "factory" relays, with the casing missing? Sit tight until tomorrow night. Email or call me tomorrow to remind me about it.

Neal.

Oh, and another point from a previous post I made- the primary manufacturer of the REPU A/C units was John E. Mitchell Company of Dallas.

There is a sticker on top the fan shroud on my 1975 with something to this effect. I'll get the exact wording next time I'm in the barn.
