Anyone Still Making Drive Shafts?

Does anyone know of any aftermarket companies still offering new drive shafts for our trucks?

Neal.

Thanks, Brad...

I remember seeing Dan posting about that, as well as Andy, but I want a totally stock setup. I have my spare parts driveshaft being rebuilt by a Michigan based heavy truck repair and parts shop, Valley Truck Parts. They were able to source me an NOS carrier bearing, will be replacing the joints, cleaning it up and rebalancing it for about $400. I am supposed to have it back in a week or so. I'd have it much sooner, but we have to wait for the carrier bearing to arrive via UPS Ground from California.

I'm really excited to see how the truck drives with a 'new' driveshaft, with fresh joints and bearing, imparting no harmonics to the drivetrain. My next step after that is installed is to completely rebuild the suspension and brakes (though it really isn't necessary). I am also going to have a radiator recored just for the heck of it.

Center carrier bearings are readily available aftermarket. My local part store had them in stock:
National part# 205, SKF part# 6205J...

Great!

Thanks! I am ashamed to admit I never looked into the carrier bearing on it's own. I knew I would have to find a complete driveshaft (since the joints were slam worn out), or get someone that can rebuild the joints as well as replace the bearing while they were at it, since it needed the assembly rebalanced (and I wanted that done with all new parts). I appreciate the info, I'll order up one or two to put back on the shelf for down the road.

Thanks Again!
Neal.

I suppose you could order a few to be safe, (I would trust SKF more than National) but as I said, it was in stock at the parts store, which usually means it is not an uncommon part. I checked online and here are the cars that bearing is used on. With cars like the Charger, 'Cuda, and old FJ Landcrusher, they'll be around for a while.

Ahhh...

...I now see why it was so hard for them to find mine. I just picked up one of the ones (#205- SKF one was not avail overnight through the store I usually use locally) you suggested. It's just the naked bearing. What Valley found for me was a true NOS complete assembly- bearing pressed in to new carrier housing and sealed.

Also, GMB has the U-joints listed as well. Just FYI, (though I know this is too late for you, it might help someone else) you can generally change out the U joints fairly easily with a bench vice and a few sockets. Position a socket larger than the diameter of the U joint on one side, and a socket smaller than the U joint on the other. Put the whole mess in the vice and turn. The small socket will press the U joint out into the big socket. To re-install, you just use the small socket to press the U back in.

Would probably be best to take it to a machine shop for a balance after, but generally if you mark the driveshaft pieces so you can re-assemble the same way, it is not really necessary. Well, at least I've never done it.

Yeah, I've rebuilt the joints on RX-7 pre-'83 shafts before, bit with the other style, what some folks refer to as non-rebuildable (caps are not held in with retaining clips or rings, but held in by ridges in the yoke), I prefer to just have a shop do it, so I can go back on them in case the machined ridges get knarled up. Plus, I wanted it done properly and rebalanced like already mentioned, so it was just easier to have them do it all the way around- especially with me not able to find an NOS carrier assembly and they somehow did.

That's a pretty good find. Was it an oem Mazda unit?

Honestly, I have no idea. I may find that out when I pick the shaft up next week.

Got the shaft back...

Looks great, now I have greasable joints, and the new carrier/hanger bearing is nice and tight on the molded rubber, just like should be. My old shaft pivoted on that rubber mounting like one of the worn out joints it was so tired. Much better. Got it all installed last night, but still upgrading a few more things today and tomorrow, so no test drive yet.

The new carrier assembly turns out is just new, not NOS. They are still being made. My receipt has a part number of 2680-10. When I Googled this, I found that the part number corresponds to a carrier bearing (listed as being for a Courier) from the manufacturer Powertrain Industries Driveline Components. I was charged $68.77 for the new carrier assembly by the shop that rebuilt my shaft, and I figure they tacked on 15-20+% markup, so these things are actually quite inexpensive, and since they are still in production, no need to worry about getting more.

Thought I'd post the info for anyone who cares or wanted to grab one for their truck. I'll post up a pic or two under my album in the gallery.

Anyone know how to set driveline angle? Shim the trans crossmember, carrier bearing, and axle so they line up?

Any recommended pinion shim on a lowered truck?

Brad pinion angel is almost flat .how low is the truck ?For 2to3 in 10 to 15 degerr pinion shims usually do the trick .if you lower it and dont mess with the pinion angle it usually knocks out the u joints pretty quick .good luck

driveline angles

Brad,

How is the driveshaft?

Years ago I had some GMC suburban specs. to correct a shudder just after launch approx 15 mph as I recall. I didn't see them where I thought they might be.

Did you get to run your truck this weekend?
